Chapter-1 -How do you define your Product

Updated: Jun 3, 2020

I have been looking for a perfect definition to describe a "Product" . Here’s what Wikipedia says:- "In marketing, a product is an object or system made available for consumer use; it is anything that can be offered to a market to satisfy the desire or need of a customer.[1] In retailing, products are often referred to as merchandise, and in manufacturing, products are bought as raw materials and then sold as finished goods. A service is also regarded to as a type of product." After reading a lot of articles on the internet and from my personal experience, I think the most easy way to describe a Product is that a Product can be anything. It can be :-

  • A software application. Perhaps various components in an application can itself be considered as products. For example- Facebook is a product. So is Facebook Live. Although one may argue that Facebook live is a feature of Facebook but not a product in itself and honestly I think it depends on the individual on how they see things. But I will say this- if Facebook was one just product, will they have so many product managers for different areas. Here is an interesting article to read to support my above statement :-

  • An experience like Virtual Reality ( Oculus)

  • Any merchandize like Fitbit, Apple AirPods etc.

  • So you see…anything can be called "Product

Since I work in Information Technology, so I will mainly focus on applications for my blog post. I will see you in the next post.
